Good news: Workplace illnesses and injuries decline

Workplace injuries and illnesses are on the decline. This is good news for workers, as it is a sign workplaces are becoming safer.

A recent report shows that instances of injury and illness decreased across the country in 2015.

Obviously this is good news for employees and employers. With the rise of awareness of potential risks in the workplace and better technology, jobs are becoming safer. Even so, the numbers show workers continue to face risks.

Here are some statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • There were more than 1.15 million injuries or illnesses that required employees to miss work in 2015.
  • 1.15 million is 4,000 fewer injuries and illnesses than there were in 2014.
  • Sprains, strains and tears of muscles and ligaments account for the majority of injures at 37%.
  • The transportation and warehouse industries saw the most injuries in 2015.

For how great it is to see the numbers decreasing, workplace injuries continue to be a major concern. These injuries require time to heal, and lead to lost production for both employees and employers. Injuries cost time and money.

Even as the numbers fall, it is important for everyone to be aware of risks in the workplace. Staying safe is the number one goal of everyone, but it’s equally important to know what to do if you are injured, and to seek the medical and legal help you need.
