Work environments and skin disease

There are many occupations that require workers to use chemicals. Exposure to some of these substances can be harmful.

Taking the proper safety precautions when it comes to working with chemicals is imperative. However, even when chemicals are handled properly, workers risk exposure. In some cases, this can lead to skin diseases.

Occupational diseases range in severity, and skin diseases are no exception. Some of these skin issues may be temporary, and some may be chronic.

Employees who work in labs that use acids, solvents, alkalies or other abrasive or potentially harmful agents are at greater risk for exposure, but these aren’t the only workers who should be aware of skin irritants. Anyone who works with cleaning solutions, detergents, medications, industrial materials and a whole host of other materials should know the dangers of skin contact.

One of the most common skin diseases is contact dermatitis, which is a reaction to an irritant or allergen. The symptoms are often burning and itching, with the appearance of a rash.

If left untreated, skin diseases can become chronic. People who have skin conditions, like other forms of dermatitis or eczema may also have more severe reactions or chronic pain and irritation.

Employers have a duty to protect their employees from all types of chemicals. While a rash may not seem like a big deal – self care can often take care of minor cases – it is not something you should have to worry about. If you are working with any kinds of chemicals, make sure to have the proper protection.
